Most of the material in the collection concerns Irven Armstrong's role as a teacher, World War I soldier, and member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The collection includes letters written to Armstrong by students at Indianapolis Public School no. 17 in 1918, when he was serving in France. The letters discuss school activities related to aiding the war effort, the 1918 influenza epidemic, and the need to support the soldiers overseas. Material concerning Armstrong's membership in Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity consists of scrapbooks and printed material.

Irven Armstrong was born in Westfield, Hamilton County, Indiana. He was a school teacher in Westfield and taught at Indianapolis Public School no. 17 before serving in the United States Army during World War I. He taught history at Crispus Attucks High School from 1928-1959, retiring as head of the history department. Armstrong was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and was the oldest member of the organization at the time of his death. From the description of Collection, 1918-1...
